Argex® is extensively used as a lightweight aggregate for civil engineering, construction and structural applications in housing, highways, bridges, tunnels & railways. Expanded clay aggregates have been successfully used worldwide as geotechnical backfill foundation material for many decades. The advantage of Argex® is that the product properties – lightweight, porous yet load-bearing – can easily eliminate several of the problems that contractors face in just one simple operation.
With low-load-bearing soils, expensive solutions and/or construction works are often required to produce low-settlement or even settlement-free solutions within a project. Argex® backfill totally eliminates this problem. The low density and ease of use (with the possibility of pneumatic unloading via silo trucks) in combination with constant quality, make Argex® the ideal solution for your infrastructure works.

When used behind retaining walls, Argex® lightweight aggregates reduce the weight applied to the back of the structure by at least 60% compared to traditional backfill material. This weight reduction prevents and drastically reduces the hydrostatic pressure due to the high drainage capacity of Argex® granules. Additions with Argex® enable savings by simply making the construction project faster and lighter.

As a lightweight and load-bearing material, Argex® is used in the construction of roads for both light and heavy traffic, bicycle and footpaths.

The ideal lightweight raw material for water buffer and infiltration basins is a package of expanded clay aggregates, packed in an open or closed geotextile. The open spaces in and between the grains ensure ideal drainage. In addition, Argex® grains can be blown by a silo truck over a distance of up to 100m. So, perfect for a quick and easy placement on sites with limited accessibility and/or drivability.
